Qualifications Requirement: Submit a completed application. (PS-1)

Secure a surety bond, or irrevocable letter of credit, or errors & omissions insurance in the minimum of $5000.

Submit two (2) fingerprint cards in the tamper proof bag provided along with form (PS-4)

Submit three (3) professional letters of reference. References can not be related to you by blood or marriage.

Submit two (2) passport photographs. (No copies or laser printer copies will be accepted.)

Schedule your exam through DPSST.

Submit proof of 1500 hours of professional work experience if applying for a private investigators license. No proof of experience required if applying for a provisional investigators license. (Some educational substitution may apply.)

The application process and criminal background check typically takes 4-8 weeks.

Reciprocity: Oregon currently has reciprocity with the state of California only.

Testing: The proficiency exam is comprised of 50 multiple choice and true/false questions. The exam is open book and all resource materials will be provided for you. You will be provided the test, answer sheet, and copies of Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) and Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) relevant to the exam. You are not allowed to use any of your own materials.

The exam covers applicable Oregon criminal statute that Private Investigators need to be aware of while conducting investigations. The exam also covers elements of ORS 703-401-703.995 and OAR 259-061.

There are up to three opportunities to pass. The exam will be taken at our academy in Salem. Call the office to schedule your exam.

Fees: Submit $79 application fee (cashier’s check, money order, or business check) and $550 licensing fee (cashier’s check, money order, or business check. No personal checks please.)

Renewal Information: Complete a renewal application

Submit two (2) passport photographs (identical)

$550 license fee (NO PERSONAL CHECKS)

Complete a Continuing Education Summary Form with the required CEU requirement.

Renewal applications should be submitted to DPSST a minimum of two weeks and or no more than 90 days prior to expiration. It is illegal for you to continue to provide investigative services after the expiration date of your license, even if your renewal is pending. DPSST cannot guarantee that we can process your renewal in two week or less, so don’t procrastinate, get your forms in as early as possible.
If your required renewal forms/fees/passport photographs are received after your expiration date, you will be assessed a $25 late fee.

After you submit the required forms/fees and passport photographs, the renewal process typically take 3-5 weeks. Along with other responsibilities, our unit processes applications for over 14,000 constituents (13,500 private security and 700 private investigators).
