Sarbanes-Oxley Act
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act was officially accepted into law on 30th July 2002, and produced significant changes to legislature in regards to the financial practices of corporations as well an increase regulation by the federal government. It brings to bear strict new rules on corporations with the objective stated: "to protect investors by improving the accuracy and reliability of corporate disclosures made pursuant to the securities laws". It is also intended to "deter and punish corporate and accounting fraud and corruption, ensure justice for wrongdoers, and protect the interests of workers and shareholders" (President Bush).
The act is named after its main originators, Senator Paul Sarbanes and Representative Michael Oxley. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act followed a series of very large corporate scandals, such as Enron.
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act helps establish corporate compliance, internal control, and also created a public company accounting board.
