California is one of the largest states in the U.S., both by land mass and population, with an official count of 37.7 million residents. Last year, 1.13 million index crimes were reported, which includes both violent crimes and property crimes. That calculates to 29.95 crimes reported annually per 1,000 residents, compared to the national median of 33.0. Of those reported, 4.11 were violent while 25.84 were property crimes. This compares to national medians of 3.9 violent and 29.1 property crimes annually. The City of Los Angeles accounts for 3.82 million of the residents of California, but the city itself is actually rated safer than 29% of United States cities. Violent crimes are slightly higher than the statewide median, with 5.32 reported annually per 1,000 residents, but property crimes are less frequent, with only 23.15 per 1,000 residents.
