For a State with a population of over 5,000,000 people, Minnesota is at the lower end of the spectrum in terms of violent crime rate, with only 2.21 annual crimes per 1,000 residents, well below the national median of 3.9. The property crime rate is also below the national median of 29.1 annual crimes per 1,000 people, coming in at 25.49. For St. Paul specifically, the crime rates are much higher when compared to the rest of the State of Minnesota. The city itself is rated safer than only 10% of U.S. cities, with 6.54 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, and 41.45 property crimes per 1,000 residents.   1. The Board of Private Detective and Protective Agent Services requires you to have at least 6,000 hours working for a licensed private investigative firm, a government investigative agency, a police or sheriff's department, or another position that would qualify as related experience.
  2. Apply for a license and pay the required fee. In addition, you must provide proof of work experience, authorize a background check and include 5 references.
  3. Complete the mandatory 12 hours of pre-assignment training and an addition 12 hours of firearms training if you plan on being armed.

Each person signing the application must be at least 18 years of age.

Each person must have a record free of felony convictions, and no record of convictions of offenses stipulated in statute

The applicant must supply a $10,000 Surety Bond (private detective or protective agent at the time of application.

The applicant must supply Proof of Financial Responsibility at the time of application

The applicant, qualified representative or Minnesota Manager for a Private Detective license must provide documentation supporting a minimum of 6,000 hours of employment, as an investigator in one or more of the following areas, showing competency and ability:

Employed as an investigator with a licensed private detective agency.

Employed as an investigator with a United States government investigative service.

Employed as an investigator for a city police department or sheriff's office.

Be employed in an occupation the Board finds equivalent in scope, responsibility and training as one of the specific occupations listed above.
